“Heathers” – brilliant 80’s black comedy for teens and young adults.

Heathers movie poster with Winona Ryder and Christian Slater

Hello, dear readers! I guess, it has been a while since I posted a movie review, so I decided to keep my blog fresh and post another one. Even though I have been quite busy with work and my love life lately, I still had some spare time to check out new movies… Well, not literally new because today I decided to review famous 80’s movie “Heathers”. I have seen this movie in countless lists of must watch teen movies but procrastinated actually checking it out because I prefer movies that were made in this century. However, one summer day I finally gave it a try, and I was pleasantly surprised.

8-heathers-quotes-1503945864

The main character of the movie is Veronica Sawyer (Winona Ryder), who is one of the most popular girls in high school because of her friendship with three rich girls with the same name – Heather. And of course – those girls love to treat less popular kids like shit. If you are a 2000’s kid – think Regina George from Mean Girls. Veronica endures it for a while until one day she realizes that she has had enough and it is time to take down the queen bee of this clique – Heather Chandler (Kim Walker). When Veronica meets mysterious Jason Dean (also refered to as J.D., starring Christian Slater) , they see a perfect chance to teach a lesson to Heather, however, what starts as a harmless act of revenge, ends up as a murder. Veronice feels guilty about committed act but J.D. convinces that they can easily get away with it by making it look like a suicide. The death of Heather Chandler is the first but definitely not the last death in this movie. I will stop explaining the plot now because I do not want to give too many spoilers. I will just say that J.D. and Veronica are quite fascinating but troubled couple. Luckily, at the end of the movie Veronica realizes that J.D. is out of his mind, refuses to participate in any further crimes and tries to stop him.

Even though most of the actors of “Heathers” are not popular nowadays, Shannen Doherty and Winona Ryder are pretty much still around. Who does not know Prue Halliwell from “Charmed” and Elizabeth MacIntyre from “Black swan”? Side note – Winona Ryder in this movie looks just stunning but that is not the only reason why her character Veronica is my favorite. I just could not imagine a better portrayal of this seemingly naive girl, who finally came to her senses and decided to stand up for herself.

Overall, even though I expected just some overrated teen movie, I was pleasantly surprised and must say it is worth the hype. To those, who want to compare “Heathers” with “Mean Girls” – do not. The first one is a black comedy and the second one – just a girly comedy. However, if you really want to look at the side by side, in my opinion, “Mean Girls” can not keep up with “Heathers” which has the most brilliant plot twist at the end of the movie. Just watch it and you will see.

Overall rating: 10/10

Usually I do not get so excited about movies but this was so brilliant that I had to share my thoughts and offer you awesome movie suggestion. Have you seen “Heathers” already? Feel free to share your opinion on it in the comment section. Until next time on Dolls Have Hearts!

6 current obsessions: from movies to books.

notebook, flower and a pen

Hello, dear readers! It’s currently Tuesday evening as I am writing this because last week was very… eventful. I’ve moved to a different city, got another tattoo and am walking from one job interview to another, trying to decide which one to take. At first I was panicking, wondering, who would ever want to hire me and then – bam! – I have had eight job interviews already. I think, I won’t go to any more and just take my pick now.  But enough about the life update, it’s time to share another lovely post with you which today will be 6 things that I have been obsessed with in the first half of 2018. I know that a lot of other bloggers share monthly favorites but, honestly, my taste doesn’t change that often and, considering the fact that I post about 4 posts every month, I would rather share more of other things. However, this time I decided to share 6 things I loved this year so far. Enjoy!

  1. Movie “American satan”. Since I discovered it in early January, this has been one of my favorite movies ever. I have watched it several times and every time I watch it, it still is exciting. And no, it’s not only because of Andy Biersack although he looks handsome. The reason why I love this movie is the plot and amazing soundtracks, who are performed by the band Palaye Royale (even though movie presents the as songs by fictional band The Relentless). If you are into rock music, a little edgy movies or you simply like Andy Biersack and Black Veil Brides, you will love this movie.
  2. Band “Mother mother”. I don’t remember when exactly in 2018 I discovered this band but I definitely think they are underrated and deserve more attention. If you don’t know where to start, I would suggest to listen to their latest album “No culture” first. My personal favorites from it are “Love stuck”, “The drugs”, “Mouth of the devil”, “No culture” and “Family”.
  3. TV series “Dynasty”. When I first saw the trailer, I didn’t think that TV series about spoiled rich people would be my thing but after two or three episodes I became addicted. At first Elizabeth Gillies caught my eye but then I actually stayed for the intriguing plot. Sadly waiting for season 2 is a real struggle. However, give “Dynasty” a try!
  4. Youtuber Muchelleb. At some point you have probably heard me mentioning inspiring youtuber Kalyn Nicholson, who posts videos about planning, organizing and basically getting few steps closer to your dream life. Muchelleb posts kind of similar content but isn’t as well-known, so I decided to give this girl a little shout out. I have started watching her channel at the beginning of this year and I still love it, especially videos about minimalism.
  5. Musician Barns Courtney. My latest and probably biggest music related obsession that I stumbled across sometime in May. He falls under folk pop and blues rock genres and his music is the closest to some music ideal in my head. The guitar in every song and the mix of folk and rock vibes just makes it sound a little dark but empowering at the same time. I am still at the process of discovering his music but so far my favorite songs are “Kicks”, “Golden dandelions” and “Champion”.
  6. Book “99 francs (14,99 euros)” by Frederic Beigbeder. If you know me, you are probably aware that for a while my favorite writer has been Frederic Beigbeder. When it comes to music, movies, books or any art form, I love a lot of shocking, dark and weird stuff. “99 francs” is one of those books that most people would consider weird, even shocking and disgusting but it also includes a lot of interesting and deep thoughts, and unusual but great humor.

I will end this list here and a little early because I simply lack time to write longer post at the moment, however, it is my pleasure to share a little bit more of my thoughts every week. Thank you for reading and until next time on Dolls Have Hearts!

5 comedy movies to binge watch during lazy self care days.

Girl with one hand in a popcorn bowl and with another one, holding tv remote

Hello, dear readers! I have had four days off from school in a row and just today I realized that it’s actually Wednesday not Monday and it’s time to publish a blog post… which I haven’t written yet. But don’t worry – I won’t leave you empty-handed. 2018 is the year when I have gotten consistent with blogging, so I’m not going to break the habit now. On a random note – vegetarianism and consistent blogging are actually two habits that I have adapted this year incredibly successfully without a single slip. Congrats to me! Back to topic – as this is one of those lazy days for me today, I decided to share 5 movies that I could watch all over and over again, if I had some spare time. (These won’t be put into any particular order because I can’t pick just one favorite movie.) Let’s dive in!

1. Easy a (2008) .

Emma Stone, holding a piece of paper and biting her lipThis was definitely one of my favorites for the longest time, I remember watching this movie in my early teens and absolutely loving it. I couldn’t stop fangirling about Emma Stone and the movie plot never got boring to me.

2. Obvious child (2014) .

Woman with black hair and brown eyes, looking up

Comedy/drama which I truly enjoyed because it stood out between a lot other movies in this genre. It’s silly, sweet and relatable at the same time. Sometimes you meet love at the weirdest time of your life and that’s alright. If you are not into cliché romance movies but something more out of the box, this one’s for you.

3. The other woman (2014) .

Three blonde, young women in dresses

Here’s something for all the ladies out there, who just got dumped, cheated on, lied to etc. I know that it sucks to be in a situation like this but there is not a day that movie with Cameron Diaz in it can’t make better. I’m serious!

4. The matchbreaker (2016) .

Guy and a girl with brown hair and brown eyes

If cute and even a little cheesy romantic comedies are your thing, you will love “The matchbreaker”. I already love the idea of the movie but the fact that Christina Grimmie is starring in this one, makes it at least 5 times better. R.I.P. to this beautiful soul, she will never be forgotten.

5. Bad teacher (2011) .

Blonde woman with sunglasses, with her legs put on the table

From all the movies on this list, I could really relate to this one the most. Not because I would be the kind of girl, who is falling for nerds or saving up to get breast implants but simply because… I was a teacher. Maybe not for a really long time period of time but six months was enough to get a taste of that. If I would keep working that type of job any longer, I would probably become just like Elizabeth (starring Cameron Diaz). And that’s another great movie with Cameron Diaz – her latest movies never fail to make me laugh, so I hope that you will like them just as much as I do.

So that is it for today’s movie list. At first I wanted to throw in some dramas and thrillers, too but then realized that for some people they might be too nerve-wrecking to call that an appropriate part of self-care. Because of that I will probably create a separate post, listing top 5 of my favorite dramas and/or thrillers. So, look forward to that! Until next time on Dolls Have Hearts when I’ll publish longer and more in-depth post! Have a nice week!

“Liberated: the new sexual revolution” – shocking and eye-opening must see documentary.

Blonde girl with sunglasses at the beach party
Source: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt6710214/mediaviewer/rm4063704576

Hello, dear readers! I really thought I should not post so many movie reviews on my blog because it would literally turn it into a movie review blog but this movie just turned my world upside down. Anyone, who knows me well, knows that I am not the type of person, who loves documentaries but this… hits pretty close to home to everyone, who is 14 to 30 years old. And, because Dolls Have Hearts readers are in that age group, I just had to review this. This is not a usual movie review like the ones I have posted before. This is a life-changing movie. So, let’s dive right in!

I found out about this movie few days ago and the trailer didn’t look very promising. For some reason I thought that this movie will show that hook-up culture is okay and that’s just how things are in 21st century. Thankfully, it did not. I really liked that this movie was divided into several parts – a male perspective into hook-up culture, a female perspective into hook-up culture and several others. Even though the truth made me cringe and cry a lot, it was so brilliant just because it was very realistic. There is so much pressure on young people nowadays. Girls are expected to look like models on magazine covers because it seems that they can only be cool and good enough, if they are desired. Boys, on the other hand, are expected to have sex with as many possible because somehow it is one of the ways, how they can show off their manliness. The more women they have sex with, the more desirable they become. I can see this ideology existing in modern world but I still don’t understand, how we have become these animals, who have made sex and sexuality this huge, important thing that basically shows our value. I can’t even put into words, how fucked up this is.

Even though I have never been on of those girls, who are always desired by most guys, I know very well, how it feels to “be on the other side”. From early teen years I have realized that, if I am not sexually appealing in the eyes of the opposite sex (mostly her peers), no one will look at me twice. No one will talk to me, everyone will laugh at my clothes, body, the way I smile, talk and move. I am automatically treated like not good enough and like I don’t deserve love in general. At the same time I have seen those desirable girls around me. Do you think they were treated like queens? No, never. They were girls, who used to show as much skin as possible just to fit in and hang out with boys. Those were girls, who let boys touch their breasts behind the curtains at school discos and who often couldn’t even walk because they got too drunk, trying to prove guys that they are cool. They were the ones, who got fucked and made fun of later. So, it looks like no matter on which side you are, you can’t win.

Talking about boys – it was hard for me to understand their point of view until I saw this movie. I always thought they were just born evil and truly enjoyed sleeping with any girl they could get their hands on and then slut shaming them afterwards. It’s like… they were not really human. After watching “Liberated: the new sexual revolution”, I kind of started to realize that they are also in a very unpleasant situation. So much pressure is put on them, too. A guy can either choose to be the undesirable virgin, who gets bullied at school or a seemingly heartless player, who is pressure into sleeping with as many girls as possible just to be cool in the eyes of his friends. No matter what they do, they can’t win either.

Now that I have briefly told you what the movie is about and what are my thoughts on the hook-up culture that it describes, here is the trailer.  If you are in your teen years or in your twenties, I’d highly suggest you to watch this documentary. It explains so much of what is happening with young adults all around the world right now. In a fucked up way, indeed but still. Just watch it.

“Rebel in the rye” – a movie that every writer needs to watch.

Rebel in the rye movie poster with Nicholas Hoult and Kevin Spacey

Hello, dear readers! Today I am back with another movie review. Do you know what kind of movies I love the most? The ones that are about writers. It doesn’t matter, if it’s based on real life events or not  – those type of movies just get me inspired and make me feel like someday I could accomplish something similar some day. There’s just something beautiful about the creative madness they portray. The struggle, the pain, love, sometimes even mental illness – all this mix tends to blow me away.

Today I’m reviewing “Rebel in the rye” – a movie, based on true events from J. D. Salinger’s life. What’s even better – Nicholas Hoult is starring the main role as Salinger himself. If you don’t know that – Nicholas Hoult is my favorite male actor and no, that’s not only because of TV series “Skins”, even though that’s exactly how I discovered him. Anyways, back to the movie. Even though it received only 28% on Rotten Tomatoes  and was rated 6,6/10 on IMDB , I thought it is worth mentioning it because, honestly, it is underrated by critics and definitely is a success not a failure. The plot follows Salinger’s life and starts few years before he goes to War when he struggles to publish his first work, meets Oona O’Neil and ends with the portrayal of his life after publishing “The Catcher in the Rye”’. You can watch the trailer here, before I continue with my thoughts about the movie.

So, besides Nicholas Hoult in main role, I loved the portrayal of a struggling writer, who does not know, if he is any good but continues to write anyway. There was one quote that stuck in my mind the most, which is this: “Are you willing to devote your life to telling the stories, knowing that you may get nothing in return? And if the answer to that question is no, well, then you should go out there and find yourself something else to do with your life because you are not a true writer.” It really made me think a lot about how I feel about writing and shed a tear because there is nothing more beautiful that a person, who is truly passionate about something. So passionate that he’s almost on the edge of madness.

When it comes to war scenes, they were very sad, grievous and definitely not easy to watch. Violence and tragic events in movies usually do not affect me but these scenes really did. I really got into the movie and it almost broke my heart, knowing that the main character could not survive and “The catcher in the rye” could have never been written. Thankfully, as you all know, Salinger survived and that is the reason why such well know book “The rebel in the rye” exists. Even though some people gave the movie two and three star reviews, I will have to disagree with them because I love the movie so much that I started crying close to the end because it really impressed me in the best way and got me thinking about my own passion for writing.

Overall rating: 9/10

If you are a writer or a passionate reader, who appreciates more than just chick flicks, you will really enjoy this movie. Until next time on Dolls Have Hearts when I will be back with different kind of post. (Seriously, this is second movie review in a row, I can’t go on like this forever.)

Review of “Raw” – shockingly gruesome French horror drama movie.

"Raw" movie poster of a girl with bleeding nose

Hello, dear readers! If there are any horror movie buffs between my followers, I guarantee that you will love this movie. Even though I usually prefer American or British dramas, this French horror / drama caught my eye when I was randomly browsing movies just several days ago. The trailer did not explain movie that well but it was enough to draw me in.

Garance Marillier

The main character Justine (starring Garance Marillier) is a life-long vegetarian, who begins her studies at veterinary school where her parents met and which her older sister Alexia currently attends. During freshman hazing rituals Justine is forced to eat a peace of raw rabbit kidney. At first she’s repulsed by that and even gets skin rash after eating it, however, later she starts craving raw animal meat. It’s not that creepy until the point where accident happens with her sister Alexia and Alexia’s finger gets cut off. She faints but Justine calls 911 and starts waiting. This is when first extra creepy part happens – Justine starts eating her sister’s finger. Moments later Alexia wakes up and catches Justine doing it but her reacting is a little odd. A normal person would run out of the room, scared in this case but all that happens is – a tear slides down Alexia’s cheek. Later on several other things happen in the movie: Justine has sex with her “gay” roommate, bites off part of random dude’s lip while making out with him, has public fight with Alexia which turns out to be very wild, bloody and… cannibalistic. I don’t want to spoil too much for you, so I’m cutting the summary short. I literally have no idea, how to describe “Raw” in an interesting way without spoiling all the details.

Now, when the plot is roughly explained, here’s what I thought of it. First of all, Garance Marillier (She’s the same age as me. Somehow surprising.) was brilliant in her character. The contrast between normal, “every day” version Justine and the one, who craves human flesh was huge and a little surprising. Alexia (starring Ella Rumpf) was pretty well-played, too, however, the character in general kind of repulsed me. Especially after what she did with Adrian (Rabah Nait Oufella). When it comes to Adrian, I found his relationship with Justine a little fascinating. There was something there. Although I hoped that it will turn out differently. Or maybe I just wished for more erotic moments in the movie because AV CLUB described it as: “Beautifully realized and disturbingly erotic.” (Honestly, I have no idea what AV CLUB is, I just noticed that review in the movie trailer.) Sure, it was erotic in some weird way but still.

Surprisingly, in general I really enjoyed the movie (even though finger chewing scene definitely made me want to look away). I have to admit that it was powerful and mind-blowing. Also, if you decide to watch it – the plot twist at the very end is just perfect in some twisted way, it gives the movie so much-needed closing and explanation why everything happens the way it does. After watching “Raw” I couldn’t return to reality for quite some time and while I’m writing this, I’m still partially confused and impressed by what I’ve seen. However, the fact that “Raw” wasn’t pure gore porn and actually had a decent plot is a huge pro.

Overall rating: 9/10

That’s all I have to say for this movie. If you are ready to get creeped out, grossed out and turned on all in one movie, this is a must watch. Also, if you have any foreign movie suggestions for me, feel free to leave them in the comments and I will watch them and review them on the blog. 🙂 Until next time on Dolls Have Hearts!

“M.F.A.” movie review.

Woman in a pink wig, holding a baseball bat and dark haired man

Hello, dear readers and followers! I’m finally back with another blog post and it’s something a little different that I usually post here. Not many of you might know that but I’m a huge movie buff. I’m addicted to watching movies. And no, not just any movies – I’m actively looking for some movie treasures – maybe not so well known movies, maybe even low budget ones – it doesn’t matter. What I care about is great plot and acting, that makes me feel intense emotions. Those kind of movies are usually thrillers or dramas and are kind of hard to find. However, today I’m sharing one of the movies I recently watched and enjoyed a lot.

M.F.A movie review

I still have no idea what it’s title “M.F.A.” stands for but I can offer you a short summary of the movie. (Small spoiler alert!) The main character is college art student Noelle (starring Francesca Eastwood), who, at the beginning is just a simple, quiet girl, who’s strieving for success in art but kind of lacks depth in her work. At one night, spent at some party she gets raped by her classmate Luke (starring Peter Vack) . At first she asks for help to her school councelor but soon find out that no one from school or even police  is  going to be on her side and punish Luke. After accidentaly killing him, she finds inspiration for her art and decides to serve justice by herself on similar rape cases nearby.

M.F.A movie review
Scene from M.F.A. (2017)

That was short description of the movie without spoiling it too much for you. Even though a lot of movie reviews say that the plot is basic and should have been more in-depth, I was too amazed by acting of Francesca Eastwood to pay attention to plot flaws. I think there’s no one else, who would’ve starred better than her in the main role. She just had this dark vibe in the movie but viewers could totally sympathize with her character, especially more towards the end. At least I did, kind of thinking: “Damn, she broke a lot of rules but in some way did the right thing.” Other characters in the movie didn’t stand out to me as much overall acting and scenario seemed pretty good to me. That’s all that I’m going to tell you about the movie speaks better about itself than my words ever will.

Overall rating: 9/10
